Rose travels to Siberia, Dimitris home. While in Russia, she meets an alchemist named Sydney. She finds out alchemists are pretty much a group of humans that covers up vampires existance, even though they hate them. Rose goes on a strigoi killing rampage, killing every strigoi she sees.
Then, Rose finally gets to Dimitris hometown. She finds his family and tells them that Dimitri is now a strigoi. They say he is dead and the town they live in, a town of dhampirs, hold a funeral for him. This is where Rose meets her slippery snake gangster of a mafia father, Ibriham. Nicknamed Abe. They call Rose Dimitri's wife, and soon she sets off with a group of rouges to find Dimitri.
Meanwhile, Lissa is back at the Academy making friends with a spirit user names Avery, even though they think shes an earth user.
Dimitri finds her. He takes her hostage, very much strigoi. He feeds off her for a while, and one day, she finally comes back to her senses. She runs from Dimitri and kills many strigoi in her path, he had been keeping her in a house filled with strigoi.
Soon, Rose and Dimitri have an epic fight on a bridge where she stakes him in the heart. He falls into the river and floats away. Rose then hitchhikes into a town where a spirit user names Oksana helps her save Lissa, she entered Lissa's head and had Lissa punch Avery from trying to push Lissa out a window.
Rose goes back home and faces the greif of killing her lover. She is excited to see Lissa again though, and has to give Adrian a chance. The book ends with finding a stake and a note in the door that was from Dimitri...
