Vampire Academy is a book about Rose Hathaway and Lissa Dragomir. In this book, Rose and Lissa had run away from the academy, because a crazy teacher, Ms. Karp had influenced Rose to take her best friend away from the danger.

Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a half-human and half-moroi. the dhampirs are charged with protecting the moroi from the evil undead vampires, the strigoi.
Dimitri Belikov was charged with bringing Rose and Lissa back to the academy. Lissa is the princess of the dragomir family, and she resumes her studies at the school as if nothing had happened. Dimitri fought to keep Rose as a student in the school rather than expell her, and the ending compromise was Dimitri gives her extra combat training to get her up to speed. most dhampir courses are combat but there are also things like history and protection and other classes, all dealing with how to protect and save your assigned moroi from killer strigoi.
Rose takes extra classes with Dimitri, Lissa begins to get driven mad by spirit and gossip and rumors being spread about her by Mai Rinaldi, another moroi. at the end, Lissa is kidnapped by a dying moroi prince named Victor Dashkov. Rose saves her at the last moment with the help from her Lissa's boyfriend, Christian Ozera, from the royal Ozera family.
The book ends off on a sweet note, with enough room that there should be another. There is.
